Social media changed society and continues to mold it, often in negative ways. Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and other sites can be platforms for hate and cyberbullying.
So what if kids could only use social media for positive interactions? That’s what a new anti-bullying program called Bridg-it is trying to create. It’s an interactive, app-based system that encourages kids to support one another by sending what they call “shoutouts” which can be seen on monitors around any given school.

When I first started my journey into building safety and wellness tools to better protect students from bullying and cyberbullying, my goal was to empower students to always feel safe and secure at school. When children feel safe at school, they are willing to take more risks and subsequently learn more and faster. I continue to believe that almost every bully was once a victim of bullying. Bullying and cyberbullying are learned behaviors; they are behaviors we either model from others or learn from our personal experiences of being bullied.

In the United States, as well as other parts of the world the number of individuals who feel they are alone and left out is reaching staggering numbers. Loneliness touches the lives of teenagers to older adults. A recent study found as much as 47% of Americans frequently find themselves feeling alone. In countries like Japan, the estimated is that half a million individuals shut themselves away for months at a time. In the United Kingdom, chronic and profound feelings of loneliness are experienced by 4 out of ten people. The United Kingdom recognizing the seriousness of this epidemic created a new Cabinet position called the “Minister for Loneliness.”

The Bridgit team had an amazing experience bringing social media entrepreneur Josh Ochs of Smart Social to one of our Bridgit schools.
Josh joined Bridgit founder and CEO Jeff Ervine at a middle school in Brooklyn, NY, to talk with students about the importance of maintaining safety and positivity while interacting online. Both the students and faculty had a wonderful time, and we hope to be able to bring seminars like this one to more schools throughout the country.

It is deplorable for anyone who advocates for children to hear that an eighth grader in the Los Angeles area was recently assaulted and bullied in a boys bathroom in their middle school by 3 classmates. It is even worse to learn that this victim was treated in this violent way because he refused to buy a vape from his bullies. Video taken by other classmates confirms that the victim has been attacked a total of 3 times. Is it any mystery that he and his parents are now suing their Palo Verde School District?
