It is deplorable for anyone who advocates for children to hear that an eighth grader in the Los Angeles area was recently assaulted and bullied in a boys bathroom in their middle school by 3 classmates. It is even worse to learn that this victim was treated in this violent way because he refused to buy a vape from his bullies. Video taken by other classmates confirms that the victim has been attacked a total of 3 times. Is it any mystery that he and his parents are now suing their Palo Verde School District?

Disciplinary policies in schools determine how the administration should respond to incidents, usually behavioral, among students and teachers – and they are in no way unanimous across the country. But, if we’re really going to put students first, and we should given they’re the future of our country, then schools across the board should seriously consider adopting a restorative approach to discipline.

Students and parents are told anonymous reporting is the best way to allow students to safely communicate when they are being bullied or feel threatened at school because creating anonymous reporting removes the threat of retaliation. But is this the real reason or is something else driving the acceptance of ineffective anonymous reporting?

As an American educator of secondary and college students for the past 43 years, I would like to know where the responsible adults— school personnel, parents, police, politicians, et. al—for our nation’s youth are hiding. Our country has become beleaguered with a staggering number of mass school shootings over the past several years, and no one is taking a firm enough stand on what to do proactively to curb these atrocities.
